FIRST LOOK: Posters, stills, and a new teaser for upcoming historical drama Secret Door
Secret Door, the upcoming sageuk (historical drama) from SBS, is exciting for a few reasons. First, it covers one of the most fascinating times in Joseon history. Second, it marks the drama comeback for Lee Je Hoon after his military service. It's always nice to be reminded that drama actors come back after their enlistment! The teaser trailer, posters, and stills promise a thrilling historical series with a solid cast. Take a look:
This series follows the relationship between Crown Prince Sado (Lee Je Hoon) and his father, King Yeongjo (Han Suk Kyu). As Korean history buffs will recall, Prince Sado reportedly went insane, sexually assaulting and murdering people within the palace. His father eventually ordered him to climb into a rice basket without food or water, where he suffered for nine days until his eventual death at the age of 27. What makes this story even more tragic is that there are disputes over whether Prince Sado was actually insane or if he was framed by political enemies.
This story has been the subject of many films and dramas. For example, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Yi San both feature Sado's son, King Jeongjo, and his belief in his father's innocence. Yoo Ah In and Moon Geun Young also have an upcoming movie that follows the prince's life. What sets Secret Door apart, however, is that the series will not only focus on Prince Sado's attempts to please his father, but it will also include some mystery as he assembles a special task force to investigate mysterious deaths, and they continue to investigate after his death. This sounds like it will take a sympathetic view of the prince, representing him as a victim who was framed for his belief in an egalitarian society.
