Popular historical romance drama, General and I, starring Wallace Chung, Angelababy, Sun Yizhou, and Gan Tingting, centers around the conflicts among four warring kingdoms. Although the original novel is a fiction, the drama's scriptwriter has cleverly found a turbulent era in China's history as a fitting time period for our sprawling saga. How do our leading characters keep hope when allegiance changes?

(Spoilers Alert)

I'll introduce the four kingdoms and their respective leading characters. Although some characters and events may resemble actual history, the gripping story is adapted from a Chinese fictional novel, written by popular author Feng Nong, that makes no claim to historical parallels.

This article is a companion piece to the introduction of the four leading characters of General and I.

1.. Jin (晉) - ruled by a generally fair king, Sima Hong (Yu Bo), whose royal consort Zhang (Deng Sha) is the villainess who resents the king and would do anything to gain what she wants.

Consort Zhang also secretly loves Chu Bei Jie (Wallace Chung), the general who has never lost in battles and a sworn brother to the king. Does love transform hate, or does hate destroy love?

2. Yan (燕) - ruled by a king who betrayed the loyal Lord Jing An in order to eliminate a potential competitor to the throne.

Young Prince of Jing An, He Xia (Sun Yizhou), and his fiancee, Bai Ping Ting (Angelababy), survived the tragic demise of their clan but are now on separate paths. The fateful future of this pair, as they grow further apart, is one of the main themes of this captivating drama.

Bai Ping Ting (Angelababy) will find her true soul mate in Chu Bei Jie (Wallace Chung), but they are subjects of enemy states.

3. Bai Lan (白蘭) - When the king died, Princess Yao Tian (Gan Tingting) returns to take the throne. She was a hostage for peace in the kingdom of Liang for 10 years. She meets He Xia and falls in love.

The union of a princess and a knight sounds like a fairy tale. But, when the princess is the ruler of a kingdom, how does she weigh decisions that may make her side against her beloved husband?

4. Liang (涼) - One of the more powerful states among the four warring kingdoms. The king, however, is not above betraying his own subjects when he wants to defeat his enemies.

Bai Ping Ting's good friend, Yang Feng (Madina Memet), now lives in Liang after she married Liang's general Zi Yi (played by Qi Hang).

It should be a joyful reunion when two old friends meet again. But, when Liang and its neighboring kingdoms enter war, how will friendship survive their respective loyalty to their kingdom and to their own love?

When allegiance shifts, how will lovers who pledged eternal love find their way to be together?

Which side would you take?
