IMPRESSIVE: Giant golden icons dominate China's architectural landscape
China's leading newspaper, The People's Daily, is building an enormous golden arch-shaped building for their main office. In contrast to the submitted proposal, it was recently revealed that the building would feature gold-colored plating. The color gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity in traditional Chinese culture, so designing in gold is a symbolic gesture for architects of these gigantic structures.
Many locals reacted by saying that the structure is garish, but the building is actually just the most recent in a series of enormous golden icons spread throughout China.
