Over the years, I have seen a lot of ploys to grab my attention, such as pink gorillas at car lots or sky banners professing someone’s love, but a few naked Buddha sculptures climbing over a wall to advertise a hot pot restaurant, now that's something new.

It might seem too crazy to be true, but in a busy area in Jinan city, massive sculptures of naked Buddhas surging over a building were displayed as an advertisement for a hot pot restaurant. Photos were posted on social media and immediately a debate ensued about whether the display was art or just offensive. Many thought the piece was humorous, but some practicing Zen Buddhists found the sculptures to have “...so little respect for its own culture…”

The advertisement display was short-lived, as they were put up on a Sunday and taken down Monday morning. The sculpture’s designer and their intentions still remain unknown.
