Last night, residents of Shanghai were treated to one of the most magnificent moons in years. A stark, blood-red moon formed above the skyline of Shanghai thanks to a lunar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse moon looked like a glowing reddish ball of illumination, and fortunately several netizens were able to capture the rare occurrence on their camera phones. Anyone in Shanghai was able to get a fantastic glimpse of the blood moon last night, which lasted for almost an hour.

A lunar eclipse officially happens when the moon travels right behind the earth and the two reach an almost precise alignment with the sun. The next lunar eclipse isn't scheduled until April of next year.
