Hallyu star Bae Yong Jun to marry actress Park Soo Jin in real-life whirlwind romance
Megastar Bae Yong Jun (Winter Sonata) is finally getting married! When this news came out, I, like everyone else, was wondering: Who is Park Soo Jin? It turned out that this is a real-life Cinderella romance that is taking place in the romantic kingdom of Hallyu-land. Where else does the prince goes to the altar with a civilian girl instead of a princess?
First of all, the official announcement was released on May 12 by KeyEast, both star's management company, which said that 42-year-old Bae Yong Jun started dating 29-year-old Park Soo Jin in February this year. He found her bright personality attractive and felt that they have many things in common, so they have decided to marry. The wedding will take place sometime this fall.
In case you didn't know, Bae Yong Jun's legendary Winter Sonata jump-started the Hallyu wave (Korean wave) and started spreading K-drama addiction all over Asia and to other continents. Other famous shows include dramas such as Hotelier and Legend. In recently years, he became a successful businessman when he started KeyEast which has famous stars such as Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Hyun Joong under its wings.
So, who is Park Soo Jin? She is an actress who has appeared in supportive roles in dramas such as Boys Over Flowers, Queen Seon Duk, and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. She was hilarious in Park Shin Hye's Flower Boys Next Door. I'd admit I didn't like her character in the show, but she gave a really funny and memorable performance. In some of the media reports, she is described as a "B actress", as opposed to A-list actors, which is unkind but kind of true.
At any rate, Park Soo Jin moved to KeyEast's management last year. According to KeyEast in a supplemental announcement that was trying to clarify that this quick romance is not a "shotgun wedding," they came to like each other fondly when Park Soo Jin visited with her friend, fellow KeyEast artist Par Seo Joon, for Lunar New Year's meal at Prince Bae's palace.
Now, the timing is important. When was Lunar New Year? Answer: Feb 19, 2015.
And, when was it confirmed that Bae was no longer with his fiancee, the chaebol heiress that he previously dated for a year and was engaged to marry? It was reported on Feb 16, 2015 that they called it off, although it is entirely possible that they had already separated for sometime. Reportedly Bae Yong Jun and his ex-fiancee separated amicably, and she even texted a good-wish message to him.
Still, you've got to feel an excitement that, in real life, a not-so-famous girl is marrying a prince. And, from February to now, it hasn't even been 3 full months of dating and they've decided to marry. That's even faster than the time it takes for a K-drama romantic series to reach its happy ending!
