Korean actors leaving showbiz for the army is an inevitable reality and actor Jang Geun Suk is no exception. We predict he will serve no later than July of this year, and here’s why.

As some of you may already know, Jang Geun Suk’s latest drama Switch premiered last week. During the drama’s press conference, he alluded to the subject of enlistment.

“I think this drama will be my last [before the military]. So there’s a greater responsibility. I’m doing my best when filming each scene to create a character of [a] lifetime,” Geun Suk said, adding that he had wanted to film more often (“one to two dramas a year”), and that he’s the happiest when performing in front of a camera.

Korean men must enlist no later than their 30th birthday. However, Jang Geun Suk’s is a special case. Geun Suk, 30, is currently in a performing arts doctorate program at Hanyang University. Since he is a student, he can delay enlistment up to 720 days from his 29th birthday under military law. He was born on August 4, 1987, and, assuming that he delayed the entry on his 29th birthday in 2016, the last day he must enter the army is July 25, 2018.

Switch will probably end by mid-May, but Geun Suk might join the army in the middle of his drama, like My Sassy Girl’s Joo Won did.

Last month, the Daebak actor treated 2,018 fans to a Paralympic ice hockey game.
