Actress Lee Young Ae, best known for her role in popular historical drama Jewel in the Palace (2003), confirmed to play Shin Saimdang in Saimdang, the Herstory. This marks her first leading role in 10 years since thriller film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005).

Saimdang, the Herstory is based on the life of Shin Saimdang, a female artist and mother of the Korean Confucian scholar Yulgok in the 1500s. Lee Young Ae plays two roles, Shin Saimdang and a university lecturer with expertise on Korean art history who unravels the secrets in Shin Saimdang's diary and a mysterious painting of a woman.

A spokesperson from the company in charge of producing Saimdang, the Herstory said the drama was planned with Lee Young Ae in mind from its inception.

"We decided that Lee Young Ae's sophisticated, elegant personality would fit perfectly with the image of Shin Saimdang. We are already looking forward to her reconstruction of the character," the spokesperson said.

Saimdang, the Herstory is projected to air in early 2016.
