Madame Antoine Recap Episodes 9 & 10: Liars Gonna Lie, Fur's Gonna fly
And so the game of cat-and-mouse continues. But who exactly is the hunter, and who is the prey? Join Marakeshsparrow, Wendilynn, and me, Cici, as we discuss the the latest developments in Madame Antoine.
Cici: I have to admit that I am a little confused by the tenacity with which Soo Hyun clings to his experiment. One minute he’s proclaiming his love for Hye Rim and his willingness to abandon the experiment with what appears to be the utmost sincerity, and the next he is scheming how to get her to participate in one more fMRI. Is he the biggest psycho in the show??
Marakeshsparrow: I am having serious emotional whiplash, as is Hye Rim! And who can blame her. Soo Hyun is so confusing! I really think he doesn’t even know what he’s doing. I want to believe that he loves her, but I also think he loves his “science.” He’s obsessed with this pursuit to prove his theory about love and women, and he doesn’t want to totally let go. I’m going to lean towards sincerity on his part though, and I think Hye Rim is doing that now too. And it looks like despite his cold exterior and complications, he’s still winning hearts. In last week’s poll he won with 49%. Is this really because people want Choi Soo Hyun or is it because of Sung Joon?
Wendilynn: Sung Joon always manages to steal my heart, but I don’t think we really understand what motivated him to start this asinine experiment in the first place. I really think this is tied to proving his mother’s and stepmother’s feelings. He clearly feels abandoned and I think he’s trying to justify it somehow. There is clearly some deep psychological need that must be filled for him to give up this experiment fully. Although, they teased us that he was doing just that right there at the end of Episode 10. Just as Hye Rim was finding out how deep the rabbit hole really goes.
Cici: I am kind of hoping that he goes back to having consultations with Mi Ran, although he was pretty arrogant about not needing her--or anyone else’s--help last time. She is just cool enough that maybe she could help him deal with whatever trauma has turned him into such a jerk. And at least she wouldn’t kill him and eat him, like Hye Rim, lol.
Marakeshsparrow: I know right now Hye Rim is ready to kill and eat Mr. Choi, as she should be. (Ok, can I just take a moment to appreciate how funny her angry breakdown was when she found out there’s a Phase 2 to the experiment?) But despite all that, I have this creeping feeling that somehow Hye Rim--or possibly even Marie Antoinette, who knows?--will be the one to help Soo Hyun overcome his Epic mommy issues. The healing power of love and all that.
Wendilynn: I really love how spunky she is and her melt down at the end of Episode 10 had me laughing so hard. I would just love to shake some sense into Soo Hyun and I totally understand wanting to eat him raw, lol. Especially if they really slept together as was suggested earlier. I’d want to flay his skin off him in strips. I really have come to just love her character. She’s not stupid, she’s smart. She is forgiving but isn’t a fool, either. And the fact that Soo Hyun IS giving us mixed messages means that there is a good person in there somewhere just dying to really experience real love and she is open to giving it to him.
Cici: Well, at least she was. Now I’m not so sure but what that love is going mix with a little revenge to become the “tough love” variety.
Cici: She is definitely ready to give back some of what she has been getting. And she’s just smart enough to turn that into a real lesson for him. I have to say that the one redeeming feature Soo Hyun has is his total lack of experience in matters of the heart. He has shut himself down for so long that he really does not have any idea how damaging or hurtful his “experiment” could be. So maybe her idea of turning the tables on him is the only thing that will help him.
Marakeshsparrow: I seriously can’t wait to see what happens when the tables are turned on the cool psychologist. I’m sure a taste of his own medicine will do him good. And I am love, love, loving the fact that Hye Rim is taking her revenge in such a clever, gutsy way. Though she can seem sweet and easy going, Hye Rim is no wilting flower! I love that she has Seung Chan and Ji Ho working as her minions now too. They’re much better off doing her bidding than Soo Hyun’s. Haha ;)
Cici: I love how quickly she can flip on and off the charming switch. Her interactions with her sister when she was trying to talk all lovey-dovey with Soo Hyun were hysterical. I have a feeling that all those years involved in drama are going to stand her in good stead now!
Wendilynn: You know, I had sort of a grudge against this actress because of her last project in Birth of a Beauty. I’m so glad she has redeemed herself in my eyes. HOWEVER, her little experiment is going to backfire. Just like Soo Hyun couldn’t handle a new man moving in, she will get trapped by jealousy as well. I really can’t wait to see Soo Hyun get a taste of his own medicine though, lol. But, I expect this won’t go well for them.
Marakeshsparrow: Yeah, who are other women she finds to take part in her version of the experiment? And won’t it go the same way it did when the shoe was on the other foot? This experiment’s hypothesis should be changed to: any two people who take part in a love experiment will fall in love one way or another. Just like Yoo Rim said to Ji Ho, “Hurry and do an experiment on me so you’ll start to like me.” Ha! --on a side note, those two continue to amuse me. I loved when Yoo Rim tossed her beer in Ji Ho’s face. He needs to come to his senses quick and realize that “noona” is a catch!
Cici: Well, I’ve got a slightly different theory on how Hye Rim is going to turn the tables on Soo Hyun by using his own experiment against him. I think she’ll go directly to Phase Two and start by asking him to do simple things like texting her to prove his love. She already made him sing her a song, after all. But she’ll make him do something completely ridiculous and pretty humiliating in the end. That’s how she’ll get him to see just how horrible his experiment has been.
But on to Ji Ho and Yoo Rim, yes they are adorable together. It’s too bad he shut her down so completely. I think he just hasn’t realized what he might have had yet.
Wendilynn: All our couples are proving to be interesting. I have to admit that I’m getting interested in Mi Ran’s storyline. Now that Hye Rim and Soo Hyun know that she’s sick, I feel they are going to take special care of her now. Watching that heartbreak on Soo Hyun’s face in the hospital tugged on my heartstrings. How does Sung Joon manage to look like a hurt eight year old?
Marakeshsparrow: I think Mi Ran is such an amazing character. I love how she likes Seung Chan so selflessly, like she doesn’t expect anything in return just enjoys the time they spend together. I really enjoyed the part where they were ice skating together and talking about unrequited love--that was probably my favorite moment from these last episodes. There’s just this easy going sweetness that both she and Seung Chan have that’s pleasant to watch. I really hope she changes her mind and decides to get treatment. I think she has too much to live for! And too much she needs to accomplish on her bucket list.
Cici: I’m with you. Mi Ran is easily my favorite character, and I admire her willingness to love Seung Chan without any strings attached. I just hope she realizes that her decision not to get treatment could hurt him deeply. Their friendship, and her kind, listening ear, is something that he will need more than ever now that he knows that he doesn’t have a chance with Hye Rim.
Marakeshsparrow: The more I think about it, the more I’m starting to believe that it’s better Hye Rim chose Soo Hyun. It seems like Seung Chan grew up knowing he was loved and thus turned out well-adjusted and ready to share that love. Soo Hyun on the other hand needs to be taught what love is really about, and I think a tough and tender person like Hye Rim is just the one to educate him. I’m sure even Seung Chan will be happy for them when he sees his brother thaw out and become an actual human being.
Wendilynn: And that is what this comes down to in the end. Soo Hyun doesn’t know what love is and it’s going to take Hye Rim to teach him.
Marakeshsparrow: Let the lessons begin!
