Most people spend or wear gold, but in Kyoto you can eat it
When you think of gold leaf and its uses, several things come to mind. It adorns the domes of special buildings, and makes professional and home art projects sparkle, but have you ever considered eating it?
If you have, you certainly can in Kyoto, Japan at an establishment called Kinkaku Soft Ice Cream. After seeing the brilliant gold leaf that covers popular tourist site Kinkaku-ji Temple (a.k.a. the Golden Pavillion), stop at this ice cream shop right outside the main temple entrance and get your own gold leaf-covered treat!
You even get to watch your soft serve sweet come to life, as they make each one to order with the care of craftsmen building a delicate work of art.
Creamy, high quality green matcha tea ice cream in a waffle cone is wrapped in traditional, gold-flecked washi paper that was made especially for the shop. A chewy rice cake ball and sweet red adzuki beans are included, and add amazing texture and taste inside the cone. Yum!
A special grade of leaf that contains a higher amount of gold content than most comes next. According to research, it gives strength and energy to the left side of your brain and gives you a comfortable, luxurious experience that does your heart good. Tourists say that the leaf seems to have no taste, and blends in marvelously with the other flavors.
How stunning is this?
Each treat sells for $9.40 USD. Sounds like a bargain to me for something that is legal eye and brain candy of that quality and magnitude. Visitors to both the Golden Pavillion and to Kinkaku Soft Ice Cream are raving about it!
Let other people spend or wear gold. If I'm ever in Kyoto, I'll spoil myself and eat some.
