On Monday, actor Kim Soo Hyun joined a training camp in the city of Paju in Gyeonggi province. He enlisted just like any average Korean man. Sources say he was careful not to have fans or reporters on site who could potentially bother the other men enlisting with him.

“He wanted to make this a private event,” Kim’s agency Key East told My Daily, explaining that the My Love From Another Star actor didn’t want a spotlight.

On Monday morning, before joining the camp, Kim Soo Hyun left a short message to fans on an Instagram post with a blank white image. The post read, “Hello, this is Kim Soo Hyun. I wanted to say a short goodbye before I leave. Thank you for those who always rooted for me. I’ll be back safe and sound. Stay healthy.”

A couple of hours later, Key East shared photos of Kim at the camp, thanking and asking his fans to support his military duty.

Though Kim hadn’t informed anyone of the location, some fans came holding placards and cheering for him, according to Yonhap News. After five weeks of basic training, he’ll be dispatched to an army base for 21 months of military service.

In 2012, Kim Soo Hyun, then 20, didn’t pass the physical examination for enlistment because of a preexisting heart condition. Kim worked hard to become fit, and earlier this year, requested and passed a reexamination, Insight reported. (Read more about Korean enlistment here.)

It seems to be a trend that actors are leaving for the military without telling their fans. My Sassy Girl's Joo Won and Save Me's Ok Taec Yeon sure did. Click here to see other Korean actors who've joined the army in 2017.
