Now there's a real animal named Totoro!
Fans of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki will be happy to hear that there's a real animal who bears the name of Totoro. A rare velvet worm was just named Eoperipatus totoros in honor of Miyazaki's classic movie My Neighbor Totoro.
The newly discovered creature is a new species of velvet worm, and it is very rare, with only 3 known specimens of the species to date (The image is of a very closely related species of velvet worm.) The name was chosen not only because the roly-poly worm looks like something straight out of a Ghibli movie, but also because it has many legs, just like Totoro's Cat Bus.
