Baeksang Arts Awards announced April 4 on its official homepage that "screen actor Park Shi Hoo
will be taken off as a nominee for the popularity award.”
Baeksang (the Korean equivalent of the Golden Globes) officials explained, “This was done in consideration of the opinions of movie fans who said that the nominee list should not include people under social criticism” and “Park Shi Hoo’s side also agreed that until the issues are all settled, it is best to refrain from most activities.”
Park Shi Hoo was leading the popularity poll for male film actor with 47 percent of the votes for his movie “Confession of Murder” before he was taken off the list. However, at 6 p.m. April 5, Park Shi Hoo’s name suddenly disappeared and Kim Dong Wan shot to the top with 55% of the votes.
Later that day, another official statement appeared on the site stating, “Due to the change in the nominees list, we are planning to refund the fans that voted for Park Shi Hoo.”
This was followed by a strong backlash from fans and netizens who complained that the Baeksang was toying with fans. Fans complained that the incident had happened long ago, and that if they had wanted to exclude him, they should have done so from the beginning and not until after voting was already in progress.
Do you think the exclusion is fair?
