Seoul, South Korea, is the plastic surgery capital of the world, with more procedures per capita than any other nation. The most common procedure in Korea is blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it's the most popular plastic surgery operation in the world, with 1.43 million people getting it done in 2014. It's so prevalent in Korea that a former Korean president had the operation while he was in office and it is often said to be given as a birthday present!
Given the normalcy of double eyelid surgery, actress Park So Dam's -- currently in Cinderella and Four Knights -- position of her own physical appearance and her thoughts on plastic surgery is all the more surprising!
In a recent interview, Park was asked how she felt about being known as the representative actress with monolids, and if she considered her eyes to be a complex...she responded,
“I think my attractive trait is that I look different from others. I’ve never thought about getting plastic surgery. I’m not saying that I’m 100 percent satisfied with my face, but I’m glad that my face is a face you can’t copy with plastic surgery."
She goes on to say, "I think that each actor should have their own kind of appeal. If there are actresses who look pretty like dolls, I think there should be actresses with faces like mine. Since actors play a variety of roles. I think it’ll be fun to watch projects where the actors each have a unique appeal. I wanted to become an actress because I wanted to act, but I thought I would never be able to stand in front of the camera. Even when I graduated, I thought I would only be able to appear in one short film. But since I turned 21, I continuously received calls for projects. That’s when I started to become more confident of my face.”
When further asked what kind of actress she would like to be in the future, she confessed that,
"Although I have worries right now, I’m trying not to get tired. If it’s not fun, I don’t think I could do this kind of work. If I get exhausted, I don’t think I’ll be able to stand back up, even if I put in the strength. I want to become a person who continues to enjoy this kind of work. While it’s okay to get tired, I hope to have that strength that makes it enjoyable.”
It's hard to imagine Park So Dam looking any different and she is beautiful just as she is!
