During the recent press conference for her new romantic comedy Producer, Gong Hyo Jin discussed the differences in working with Jo In Sung (It's Okay, That's Love) as well as Kim Soo Hyun and Cha Tae Hyun in the new drama. Her candid comments are quite revealing.
Gong Hyo Jin started by talking about the age differences: “Jo In Sung is one year younger than me whereas ‘Producer' Cha Tae Hyun sunbae is older than me, and Kim Soo Hyun is about seven years younger, so the [age] gap is big,” she says.
She sounded really comfortable with Jo In Sung: "When I was acting with Jo In Sung it felt we like peers. He is an outstanding actor who could take on a PD role, but an actor who has mastered how to make other actors and staff feel comfortable."
Next, she talked about Cha Tae Hyun who is 3 years older than she. In the drama, her character has been friends for over 20 years with Cha Tae Hyun. She said, “With Cha Tae Hyun sunbae, my acting is very rough and comfortable."
However, her character's relationship with Kim Soo Hyun is quite different. Kim Soo Hyun is younger by about 7 years, and he plays a young and newly hired PD who her character "wouldn't even eat with one-on-one."
She admitted to experiencing some challenges, "Cha Tae Hyun sunbae and I have a similar tone, so our chemistry was good without requiring any adjustment whereas with Kim Soo Hyun we are still adjusting. I think that’s why I am able to [approach] the acting earnestly.”
On the other hand, she said with a sunny optimism, "Because the difference is so drastic, I am glad that I was able to meet these two while acting and believe I will be able to do entertaining and much more multifaceted acting."
Gong Hyo Jin is really candid and straightforward. You can tell she works hard to understand the differences in working with her co-stars and is able to translate the differences for her acting. No wonder she has been successful with all her dramas.
