Cockroaches are a species that have existed longer than humans and will likely scour the earth’s underground far past our time. To many they are horrid and disgusting creatures, but to some Japanese scientists they are a technological opportunity.

Researchers at Osaka University and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology are collaborating to develop a fuel cell system that uses sugar drawn through a needle out of a cockroach’s internal system to create enough power for a wireless sensor strapped on the back of the cockroach. The scientists can design the sensors according to their needs, then create a network of sensors all powered by the lives of cockroaches.
