With the addition of the stellar romantic and revenge epic Nirvana in Fire, we now have a great collection of top quality Chinese historical dramas at DramaFever. Because of China's long history and many dynasties, along with costume changes for each dynasty, here is a list of these sprawling Chinese historical romances listed in chronological order.
1. Virtuous Queen of Han, starring Wang Luo Dan and Raymond Lam, is an enchanting account of a lowly servant's daughter who eventually became the empress of one of the most famous Chinese emperors. The Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) is the second dynasty in China. Lasting over 400 years, it is considered a golden age in Chinese history. To this day. the majority of Chinese refer to themselves as Han (漢) people. The emperor in this drama is the great Han Wu Di (141 - 87 BC).
The story takes place in Han dynasty in the era after the Virtuous Queen of Han, as the hero Wei Wu Ji is a fictional dramatized character based on Queen Wei's real life nephew. Cecilia Liu was outfitted with hundreds of costumes in this drama.
Set in the Southern Liang dynasty (502 - 557), the romantic adventure and revenge epic is about a young man who hides under a new name and a new face for over a decade in order to seek justice for his destroyed family and clan, and to meet his first love again
The Prince of Lan Ling is a real historical figure during the Northern Qi dynasty (550 - 577). He was a warrior hero who was also one of the only three most beautiful men as documented in China history. He was so handsome that he had to wear a gruesome mask during battles. This drama fuses real history with fictional characters to give us a vibrant romantic adventure about the prince and his one true love, a beautiful priestess, during a time of upheaval when their nation was ruled by a tyrant.
This fun romance takes place in early Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644). The plot follows a handsome heir to an aristocratic family being married by mistake to a substitute lower class bride. Their path to love is paved with comedic conflicts and romantic adventures. Happy ending is guaranteed.
The story about a young woman, who aspires to be a physician despite great restrictions against women's choices, is set in the Ming dynasty during a turbulent period in mid-15th century. This amazing story is about a modern woman who travels back in time to early Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) and unwittingly becomes a witness to the famous battle among 9 princes over royal succession. The groundbreaking story that fuses both time travel and historical romance genres, adapted from a famous Chinese novel, has now become a classic, and a Korean remake, Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, is underway. A further amazing reason to watch the drama is that the leading couple Cecilia Liu and Nicky Wu fell in love and got married in real life.
Costume drama buffs probably have noticed the dramatic change in royal fashion as compared to prior dynasties. Actually, for all males in China, a great change happened once the Machurian-ruled Qing dynasty began, as every man was required to shave his forehead in the style presented in this drama. Although affluent Han women still had their feet bound, the Manchurian women did not bind their feet, and royal ladies wore a type of platform shoes with the high heel positioned under the middle of the sole.
Which dramas from this list have you watched? Which one is your favorite so far?
As you may have noticed, there are some gaps between the eras presented in the dramas available in our portfolio. My hope is that DramaFever will continue to add great dramas and we'll eventually have a more complete list of dramas. Dare I hope, at least the Tang dynasty, also a golden era where gorgeous costumes are worn?
In the meantime, Nirvana in Fire will be completely upload with all episodes this Friday. Binge on!
