The world is under Saimdang: Light's Diary's spell! Is K-drama hottie Song Seung Hun responsible for its success or is it the beautiful storyline?

Today, the enthralling historical/modern series ends its incredible run. Even though South Korea wasn't entirely impressed by the series, the rest of Asia became captivated. It has been reported that the K-drama was a hit in China, Japan, Taiwan and more countries. Through export revenue alone, the production company made $15 million of their initial $20 million investment. “While we cannot reveal exact numbers, we made a significant surplus in profit," a source from the production company said.

The ban China placed on K-dramas airing in the country didn't affect it's popularity in the least, because SBS had already received copyright fees prior to the ban. It was upsetting to learn that Saimdang: Light's Diary had viewership under 10% during its initial airing in South Korea, however, the international love is making up for it big time. Many global fans must have missed Lee Young Ae terribly during her 12 year hiatus from acting. Now, that the Jewel In The Palace actress is back, they are not letting her go again.

Actor Song Seung Hun's on-screen chemistry with Lee was stellar. The love their characters had for each other was pure and expressed through their selfless and heroic deeds. It is heartbreaking to say goodbye to their historical and modern day characters, especially since the two of them didn't have an opportunity to interact in the present day. Nonetheless, I hope this series gets the happy ending it deserves.

What do you think about the show's popularity overseas? Did you love the actors' performances too?
