Ok Taec Yeon of Save Me joined the army on Monday, Sept. 5, 2017, which was, coincidentally, 2PM’s ninth debut anniversary. Taecyeon joined the infantry division in Sungsuk-dong, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province. Taec Yeon, who believed enlisting was not a big deal but every Korean citizen’s duty, had wanted to enlist quietly, according to JYP Entertainment. Accordingly, only the family and band members sent him off at the training center.

Back in 2008, Taecyeon took a physical examination and was asked to serve in civil service because of his chronic lower back pain. However, he was determined to become a soldier. In 2010, Taecyeon voluntarily renounced his permanent resident status in the United States to join the Korean army. He received two surgeries in 2012 and 2013 to fix the slipped disk while staging 2PM performances and filming K-drama Who Are You.

If you’re familiar with Korean celebrity enlistment, you will know Taecyeon’s is an unusual case. Most celebrities opt out of the army when asked to serve in civil service. Kudos to Taecyeon for serving in the South Korean army!
