Secret Message Drama Club Episodes 1-3: Is It Love?
Here we are Lovers. This is the drama we have been waiting for. Any BIGBANG fans out there? Well, you are in for a treat with this one! Join Marakeshsparrow, Jazmine, and Ajummah as they discuss the first six episodes (technically three episodes split into 2 parts each) of the much-anticipated web drama Secret Message.
Watch the premiere now:
Marakeshsparrow: I have one word… T.O.P. ehem That is all. There, I’m done. I have no more commentary for this drama. Just T.O.P.
Ajummah: I know what you mean Marakeshparrow. I was really looking forward to watching this drama because that meant I had 10 minutes with Choi Seunghyun. sigh I will be honest though, the first episode made me want to turn it off. As much as I adore Seunghyun-ssi, his character annoyed me a bit.
Jazmine: As a VIP, and T.O.P bias this drama is everything. I love Tabi’s acting so much. I agree with you Ajummah, I was kinda turned off by his character at first but I found him more endearing by the end of the first episode. I think he has a somewhat complex character to play who has room for a lot of growth. The episodes are short so I wonder how much growth he’ll actually have.
Marakeshsparrow: So his character Woo Hyun honestly didn’t bother me much. And I think that’s because the whole time I was watching I kept thinking “This is the perfect role for T.O.P” --he’s an artist (filmmaker) who is totally consumed with his work and doesn’t think of much else. Also, as a filmmaker myself I know that’s pretty accurate, haha. But I think we saw fairly quickly that there is definitely more than meets the eye with him. He’s recovering from some intense heartbreak. We don’t know all the details yet, but whoever she was she seemed to do a number on him. I think there’s a fair chance he will start to warm up and behave more like a human, but I agree--I’m wondering how much story and character development we’ll get with these mini episodes.
Ajummah: It took me the longest to get warmed up with everyone I guess. I think Woo Hyun is alright. Just a guy who got his heart broken by some snot nosed… excuse me. I don’t like it when someone hurts someone I admire, even if it’s only a drama. I think I may have had more of a problem with Haruka. It’s clear she was hurt by someone, though I’m not sure if the person has died or if he has just moved on and changed his number. But the whole being afraid of cameras, or whatever happens to her, is a bit much for me. I think we need to hear more of her backstory in order to give us a clearer picture of her character. She’s in Korea because she wanted to start over and do what? Join a dance troupe? What is she running from? Heartbreak? A murder charge? Ajummah needs to know!
Jazmine: I was actually pretty intrigued by Haruka from the beginning. I think the person she loved just left her, I’m not sure if he's dead because she was very surprised when her message was read. I'm interested in her backstory too and I also find her strangely charming. Also, this is a good time to mention that Amy, her friend, is played by Yoo In Na whom I love dearly with my soul and she's also a part of YG. Okay, anyway Haruka seems to have gone through a lot and I wonder if she was a famous dancer that messed up badly on stage one time….
Marakeshsparrow: I definitely have my fair share of questions regarding Haruka. She’s certainly intriguing. Though I agree there are things about her behavior I find really annoying. She seems so timid at times and kind of awkward. I was wondering if she was a celebrity, but she doesn’t seem to have the people skills to deal with that kind of thing. Either that or whatever happened to her was really traumatic. Something that involved flashing cameras… Hmmm… I am very interested to learn more. I’m loving this coincidental connection that the two of them have though! What are the odds he would end up with her old flame’s phone number? (Very low methinks, but //shrugs//) I did love that though--that she texted him “Was it love?” by accident. It’s a great way for our two leads to meet, I have to say. I’m wondering if this is going to take a “You’ve Got Mail” turn where they meet in person and dislike each other, not realizing they’re each other’s “Line pal”.
Ajummah: I’m dialing every old number I know, seeing if I can get to Woo Hyun and sadly, it isn’t working.
Marakeshsparrow: OMG great minds think alike!
Ajummah: Seriously though, I agree that the odds are so ridiculously low but for the sake of drama, I’ll by it. People converse with each other on SNS all the time so why not random strangers texting each other. Haruka is in Korea but speaks Japanese, Woo Hyun is in Japan but speaks Korean… I see what the writers are doing here. The similarities are running rapid. Will Haruka run into the woman that broke Woo Hyun’s heart? Will Woo Hyun interview the man that destroyed Haruka? Will have to see. It’s really interesting that this type of drama (melodrama) has 10 minute episodes. I feel like that doesn’t leave for a lot of time where the characters are just spacing out. We need to have the “meat” of the drama and fast because there is only a limited amount of time. So maybe we don’t focus on the dance troupe so much? And T.O.P…. I want 10 more scenes of you getting drunk and dancing like in episode 5, okay? Thanks.
Jazmime: I live for Tabi’s dancing. It brings me joy no matter what. And drunk Tabi? Always here for it. I just take a second and mention how creepy that guy was that was hitting on Haruka. Like omg he was trying waaay to hard, I was happy for Woo Hyun’s text message that saved her. The secondary characters in this drama are okay to me. I don't like Woo Hyun’s hyung and the girl that works with them in kinda just there. I like Amy and her dance partner, the other guy is just a total creep. What do you ladies think?
Marakeshsparrow: Yeah, Woo Hyun’s hyung is really too much. He won’t shut up about that girl, Mariko and she likes T.O.P. Okay, actually that’s pretty funny. I loved when she was trying to get him to go see a movie with her and he was just staring blankly at her, all Tabi-like. And then he just took the tickets and left to go with his friend. BUT--I really wanted Hyung to just shut up about that girl for a moment. I think one of my favorite moments from these first few episodes was the party they went to. Did anyone notice that random white guy who kept harassing Woo Hyun’s hyung and he was all, “No no no! No!” Hahahaha! What was that guy doing? And why was that part even in this? For having to get to the meat of the drama, there have definitely been some random moments. But back to your question--the secondary characters don’t do much for me. I totally agree that Haruka’s dance partner was CREEPY. So cute too--an interesting dichotomy. Or maybe a life lesson: creepers aren’t always creepy looking. Yoo In Na is always lovely though. I really do like her as an actress and this is no exception.
Ajummah: Amy’s dance partner is played by Lee Jae Yoon who starred in my favorite drama, Cruel City. If you haven’t seen it, you are seriously missing out. When I saw him, I started fist bumping the screen and making some strange squealing noise known in my house as “Ajummah’s kdrama noise”. The party scene was perfect and I wish that I was there doing my uncoordinated dance right along with Woo Hyun.
With the drama releasing 3 episodes a week, it will be interesting to see how the storyline will progress. Any thoughts on what’s going to happen next?
Jazmine: What I would like to happen is Woo Hyun go back to Korea meet Haruka, they kiss kiss fall in love without the craziness and there we have it. And while that would be ideal, that's not gonna happen. In reality, I want Woo Hyun to interview more people and finish his film while talking to Haruka and slowly getting to know her better and then when he finishes his film debut it in a film festival in Korea and meet Haruka who by then has gotten over her phobia and has increased her dancing skills. They love happily ever after. The end. (I have put too much thought into this hahaha).
Marakeshsparrow: Well the masochist in me wants DRAMA! Wahahahaha! I’m hoping Woo Hyun and Haruka meet and don’t realize who the other is. Much confusion and almost reveals follow, keeping us on our toes until the very end when there is a chaste kiss. Only one. HA! Ok, that last part was a joke. A bad joke. I want all the kissing. LOL. But really I’m very excited to see where this goes. Honestly my excitement is not all T.O.P related either. I’m enchanted and intrigued by this mini story so far.
