On December 14th, Jong Hyun, a member of the K-pop group SHINee, changed his twitter profile picture to represent his support of the sexual minority, and now he is under attack.

Editor's note: The term "sexual minority" is commonly used in South Korea to represent people in the LGBT*QA community.

Some members of ILBE, which is famous for being a troll community site made up of people who insist they are extreme conservatives, joined SHINee's fan club website in order to attack Jong Hyun. They also did the same thing on ILBE, so SHINee’s fan club, SHINee World, declared war against ILBE. After ILBE members posted some obscene photos with mean captions related to women's bodies on SHINee's website, the war quickly became serious.

In Korea, demonstrations by religious circles and university students on the state of affairs keep going on against the present government. There are protests called ‘How are you? I am not alright. 안녕들 하십니까? 저는 안녕하지 못합니다.’ in which students hang handwritten posters on universities’ bulletin boards and outside to express their frustration.

K-pop group SHINee’s Jong Hyun changed his twitter profile photo to one of theses protester's posters. Interestingly, he chose one that points out the unfairness of a Korean society that suppresses the sexual minority. This poster was written by a transsexual university student who is bisexual. After Jong Hyun’s profile became famous among netizens and SNS users, he sent personal messages to the student, and the student revealed them.

Translation :

I am sending these messages for fear of the damage or attention caused to you by my tweet that you may not want. I support you. As an entertainer, as a minority in a different definition who deals with the public, I feel a great sense of loss in this world where we don’t admit differences. Of course, this can’t be comparable to your feeling.

I support you shouting squarely that difference isn’t wrong. I don’t think you are a person who needs other’s consolation or concern. You are as strong as much. I wish you stay healthy, and have a warm end of the year.

Many people support his tweet that expresses his belief. However, ILBE, which is famous as an internet community of extreme conservatives, attacked him over this. Before this issue, their behavior of damaging protester's posters and taking pictures with ILBE’s finger sign had caused controversy among people. After SHINee’s fan club, ‘SHINee World,’ declared war against ILBE on their website, some of ILBE’s members posted inappropriate pictures and captions on the SHINee world site and then uploaded screenshots of them to show off to other ILBE members.

I already wrote about ILBE in my article about Beak Ji Young’s lawsuit against netizens. Now people are really interested in this issue, and some of them want the whole SM fandom to fight alongside SHINee’ fans against ILBE. There are now many young fans of SHINee on the SHINee World site expressing their worries about what ILBE did.
