SM Entertainment to start international K-pop academy
Aspiring K-pop stars rejoice and get ready to go to school! SM Entertainment has announced that it will soon be opening an international K-pop academy in Gangnam, Seoul
Have you ever wondered if you had what it takes to become a K-pop star but you didn't know how to go about becoming one? Well, you are in luck! SM Entertainment, one of South Korea's premier agencies has announced that they will be opening up their own international K-pop academy in collaboration with Jongno Sky Academy. The agency has stated that they plan to open the school by the beginning of next year.
The academy will be open to international students as well as Korean citizens and the curriculum will include coursework in: English, Korean, math, music theory, dance, etc.. SM will handle the arts / entertainment related part of the curriculum, while Jongro Academy will take care of the other academic subjects. Students will also have a choice between a Korean or English focused curriculum. If this all sounds too good to be true...well there is one small catch. Unfortunately, the school will not be fully accredited, so students will have to take a high-school equivalency exam at the end.
With SM already having started recruitment presentations last year, the current plan for the academy is to welcome 300 to 400 students this coming year. So far, out of the students who already applied, 70% were Chinese and other foreigners, while 30% were Korean citizens. If this international academy is successful, SM is considering opening another branch in China as well.
