Song Joong Ki already receiving offers for post-army comeback
Be still, my beating heart — Song Joong Ki is already fielding offers for his comeback role! The actor is reportedly in talks for his first project after his military service ends in May.
It sounds like Song Joong Ki fans (and, honestly, who isn't a Song Joong Ki fan??) won't have to wait long to see the talented star in a juicy role. So far, he has received offers for leading roles in a big-budget movie and a major drama.
Song Joong Ki's first reported offer was for Fist Fighting, a sci-fi fantasy film set in the near future during an energy shortage. It follows a hero who helps a small village that has discovered the secret to unlimited energy as they fight against stronger powers.
The film has faced massive casting drama, with original star Jo In Sung dropping out after the schedule changed. The project then changed hands and gained momentum with a 20 billion won (~20 million dollar) investment from China, and Yeo Jin Gu signed on for the role, only to be dropped when the producers tried to get Kim Soo Hyun instead. When Kim Soo Hyun declined the role after hearing about Yeo Jin Gu's broken contract, the movie was left without a lead, and now Song Joong Ki is considering the script.
His second confirmed offer comes from Kim Eun Sook, the famed writer behind hits like Secret Garden, A Gentleman's Dignity, and, most recently, Heirs. Her latest drama is called Descended from the Sun, and it's an ambitious series that follows an army surgeon and a soldier in the special forces security team for the UN Peacekeeping forces. As the two face disaster rescue missions overseas, they fall in love.
PD Lee Eun Bok of Secret is set to direct, and Kim Won Seok of Queen's Classroom will co-write. Interestingly, there are plans to pre-shoot the entire show before release, which is highly unusual in the Korean live shoot system.
Both of these projects sound like they could be big hits for Song Joong Ki, but his company has said that he has other offers on the table, as well, and more are sure to come in before his May release.
What do you think of these options? Would you like to see Song Joong Ki in a Kim Eun Sook production, or would you prefer another type of role for the versatile star? Comment below, and while we wait to see what he decides, you can re-watch him in his last pre-enlistment project, Nice Guy:
