Tokyo Disney Resort is for many the ultimate setting for fairy tale weddings, but this wedding was a first for the venue: Koyuki Higashi and her partner Hiroko (who did not provide her last name because her family is "not fully comfortable" with her sexuality) were the first same-sex couple to be married there. Higashi, an actress and gay rights activist, tweeted the photo below, along with the message “My partner Hiroko and I just held a gay wedding at the Tokyo Disney Resort. Even Mickey and Minnie are here to celebrate with us!” In the Japanese media, headlines such as "Mickey Mouse supports gay marriage!" were seen when it was learned that the resort initially asked one of the couple to wear a tuxedo so as not to "make other visitors uncomfortable," a request that the hotel has since apologized for.
The response on Japanese social media sites has been a mixed bag. While some expressed support, others such as a user identifying himself as Nizo Hakoda wrote, “watching the news made me wonder why they had to hold their ceremony at a crowded place like Disney. It’s fine for the people who accept it, but there are others who don’t.” Japan does not recognize same-sex marriage, but Hiroko hopes that the couple's very public wedding will "prompt Japan to question why it so often ignores or discriminates against minorities. Mostly we just want people to know that gay people exist for real, and we would like to throw weddings like everyone else.”
