UP IN SMOKE! South Korean company pulls 'racist' cigarette ads
This is definitely not a good way to sell anything! The largest cigarette company in South Korea, KT&G, has pulled its advertisements for a new line of cigarettes that depict humanlike monkeys in Africa. The cigarette line, called "This Africa", contains tobacco from Africa and shows ads of monkeys as news reporters often with the words, "Africa is Coming" written underneath the photo.
A spokesperson for KT&G said that they will be taking down the ads this month and told the Agence France-Presse, "We absolutely had no intention to offend anyone and only chose monkeys because they are delightful animals that remind people of Africa." It's hard to tell if KT&G is clueless or just very, very racist. Either way, it's not good.
