It's that time of the year... cherry blossoms, easter eggs, and new dramas! Here's a quick look at some upcoming Taiwanese dramas making some buzz.

Hayate the Combat Butler duo

Hayate the Combat Butler

Also known as Xuan Feng Guan Jia. Based on a famous manga of the same name. George Hu of ToGetHer plays a down-and-out man who saves a wealthy heiress from  being kidnapped and becomes her butler/bodyguard. Korean star Park Shin Hye of You're Beautiful has been (inexplicably? Apparently the Taiwanese fan meetings she held after You're Beautiful led to her casting) cast as the heiress. Premieres April 13.

Drunken to Love You

Drunken to Love You

Rainie Yang and Joseph Chang will star in this Fated to Love You spinoff. Rainie Yang, who won a Golden Bell award for Best Actress not too long ago, has cut her hair short for the new role, a look she says reflects the character's toughness.  According to her, she was drawn to the role because of the great script and she has created a new style of humor for the role. And, because it's a Taiwanese drama and an SETTV drama, the drama will feature a steamy sex scene between the two leads. (It also apparently features bread and baking heavily). April

Material Queen

Material Queen

Stars Vanness Wu and Lynn Xiong. See the previous post highlighting it. This was initially set to air in March, but it's been delayed and is now rumored to be broadcasting in May

Sunshine Angel

Sunshine Angel

In the very small world of Taiwanese entertainment, it's almost surprising that these two top stars haven't worked together before, but Rainie Yang and Wu Zhun's time has arrived as inevitably as Megan Lai in a Vic Zhou drama. Wu Chun plays a second generation entrepreneur who ends up living in the streets after going bankrupt, while Rainie is a maid. Genie Cho and George Hu co-star and Jiro Wang has what looks like a minor role. Will probably debut in May. Check out some photos from the filming here.

Mei Lei, Go

Cyndi Wang and Mike He. Highlighted this in a previous post. No air date yet.

Rainbow Sweetheart

Jimmy Lin, Cherrie Ying. Have already highlighted this on Dramafever. Currently in production, no air date.

Extravant Challenge

Extravagant Challenge

Plagued by a string of delays, casting changes, and the like, this drama based on the popular manga Skip Beat has been in limbo for a year now. Rainie Yang was the original choice, but she dropped out some time ago and has since been replaced by Ivy Chen, breakout star of Black and White.  Super Junior members Siwon and Donghae will be male leads.

Next Heroes

Next Heroes

Megan Lai is finally the lead of a major drama!  Taiwan's first 3D prime-time drama, no less. Produced by Next TV, the cop drama stars Lin You-Wei from 2010's Endless Love as the male lead. Kingone Wang, who has co-starred with Lai in approximately a billion Vic Zhou dramas (Silence, Wish to See You Again, Mars, Meteor Garden II) is apparently relegated to supporting character yet again. It will be a daily drama and will broadcast sometime in the summer, probably June.
