UPDATE: Kim Hyun Joong indicted in assault case, faces fine
Kim Hyun Joong has been indicted on charges of assaulting his former girlfriend, according to reports from the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutor's Office on January 19. The court issued a fine of 5 million won (~$5000 USD) in the case.
Last August, Kim Hyun Joong's former girlfriend filed charges of assault against him. In September, she agreed to drop the charges if he made a sincere apology, which he did in both public and private. However, during the course of the police investigation, Kim admitted to one specific fight that got physical, so the prosecution was able to pursue that single assault case even without the girlfriend's charges. Although Kim Hyun Joong said that the harm was unintentional, the prosecutor's office explained that "While Kim claimed that he had no intention of hurting her, the damage from the attack was clear." Kim Hyun Joong's former girlfriend had also documented her bruising and other injuries for the police.
If Kim Hyun Joong agrees to pay the fine, the case against him will be closed.
What do you think of this case? Is $5000 a fair penalty for the charge against him?
