VIDEO: The last 40 years of Tokyo fashion in a little over 5 minutes
In 1976, now-iconic clothing brand BEAMS was established in Harajuku, Tokyo, where it would greatly influence style and fashion for millions of Japanese youth and young adults, even to this very day. To celebrate, BEAMS created a music video showing the evolution of Tokyo fashion and music culture over the last 40 years, and as you can imagine, it's loaded with style.
Titled TOKYO CULTURE STORY, the short music video will give you a crash course in the history of Japanese trends, complete with clothing labels, looks, and guest appearances by artists who are known for songs that represent a specific time in the last 40 years. The song used in the video is a medley cover of "Tonight is Boogie Back (smooth rap)," by 90s rap group Scha Dara Parr, and everyone from former idol Chisato Moritaka to current vocaloid star Hatsune Miku join in on the fun. For such a short video, it is chock-full of trends, which shows just how style-conscious the Japanese people are. It's a very cool video, and coming from BEAMS, it's about as legitimate as it gets when it comes to the history of modern Tokyo style culture.
If you're into fashion, this video is definitely worth a watch. Enjoy!
