Who is the beautiful actress that plays the Mermaid Princess in Ice Fantasy?
New drama Ice Fantasy is about an epic battle between the Ice and Fire tribes, but did you know about the Mermaid tribe? Take a look at the fantastic costumes designed for the Mermaid Princess Lan Shang, and find out more about the uniquely beautiful actress, Mai Dina, who is from one of China's ethnic minority groups.
SPOILER ALERT: Lang Shan is a princess of the Mermaid Tribe. Viewers first meet her at the birthday party for Ice Tribe's Prince Ka Suo in episode 1. She is fascinated by Prince Ka Suo and wants to meet him in the forest, but she encounters someone unexpected and dangerous, Fire Prince Xin Jue.
In the Ice Fantasy world, the Ice, Fire, and Mermaid tribes are immortals who can only marry those from their own immortal realm. For instance, Korean actress Kim Hee Sun's character, Lian Ji (aka Lotus), is from the Mermaid Tribe, and she is married to Prince Ka Suo's father, the king of the Ice Tribe.
You can see Mai Dina in this behind-the-scene footage:
So who is Mai Dina? What makes her unusual?
You may be surprised that Mai Dina is from one of China's 55 minority ethnic groups. In China, 92% of the population are from the Han group. Han Chinese have dominated Chinese history and politics for thousands of years. Most of the Chinese people you meet are probably Han, and that tends to be the same for Chinese leaders and celebrities.
However, Mai Dina is not Han Chinese.
The 28-year-old actress was born in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Xinjiang (literally "New Territory") is located in the westernmost area of China, and it's traditionally populated by the Uyghurs. Many of the Uyghurs are Muslims.
Mai Dina's full name is 麦迪娜 买买提, or Madina Memet (مادىنا مەمەت ). It is pronounced in Mandarin Chinese as Mai Di Na Mai Mai Ti. Her name, Madina, comes from Madinah (aka Medina), the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
She graduated from Xinjiang Arts University with a dance degree, and speaks Mandarin, English, and Uyghur. She is also a singer and model.
Interestingly, she rose to fame in 2011 in her first drama, New My Fair Princes, as Han Xiang, a character loosely based on a famed Uyghur concubine to the great Emperor Qianlong of the Qing dynasty.
She now plays a Mermaid princess in Ice Fantasy. Check out her gorgeous and fantastic costumes:
Ice Fantasy stars Feng Shao Feng (Prince of Lan Ling) and f(x)'s Victoria Song as lovers caught in the battles between the Ice and Fire tribes. The new drama is on-air on DramaFever with 6 episodes in the first week, followed by 4 episodes each week.
