Modern romantic drama The Way We Were, starring Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin, has been the top new series in China ever since its release. It has consistently outranked Moonshine and Valentine, even though the fantasy romance has been the leading Chinese drama on DramaFever's Top 10 index. The reason may be beyond the stars and the different genres.

Tiffany Tang and Luo Jin frequently top the Chinese entertainment news headlines, especially when they confirmed their dating relationship after The Princess Weiyoung. Ever since then, Chinese tabloid news has often speculated when the star couple would marry, whether Tiffany is pregnant, or even that they've already broken up based on their not holding hands in public. There is no confirmation on any of the above speculations yet, but there has certainly been a frenzied buzz about the modern romantic drama.

But there just may be another reason for their new drama's high popularity.

The main topic of the drama is about Chinese students who travel far to the United States to study. Ever since the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the U.S. in 1976 and proceeded to transform itself in a very fast and stunning manner in the last four decades, one of the driving forces for change has been brought about by students who studied in the western countries and became bridges in cultural understanding and economic transformations. Although in the past, even during the waning Qing dynasty, there were Chinese students who went to foreign countries to study, the wave of new Chinese overseas students in the recent decades has seen a great impact along with the rise of the global economy. There is, in general, a curiosity among regular Chinese about the students' lives abroad.

Another reason is the crackdown on corruption that has been a top priority being enforced by the Chinese government. Luo Jin's father in the drama represents a face of corruption. That money and greed is the root of evil has been a universal theme in fictional storytelling, but in China, there are already some real-life high-profile cases of important government officials and wealthy businessmen being convicted of corruption or embezzlement crimes. White collar crimes are punished harshly in China.

A confluence of these factors has generated very high interest for The Way We Were. That's not to say people aren't selective about dramas based on quality in direction and performance, and The Way We Were has delivered on its promise of a modern romance.

In the meantime, Moonshine and Valentine has far exceeded its original expectation. In China, it has frequently placed in second place just behind The Way We Were, and the leading stars Victoria Song and Johnny Huang are also trending currently as the most favorite couple.

Cheers to both dramas!
