Why Korea will be the next big international beauty influencer
It may not be long before the average American looks to Korea for beauty and fashion inspiration. Over the last decade, Korean style has dominated the Asian market largely because of the increasing popularity or Korean dramas and K-pop. Countries outside of Asia are now starting to pick up on the biggest trends too, and it's not just BB and CC cream.
Korea's beauty exports hit a record $1.04 billion in 2013, according to Statistics Korea, and the Seoul International Cosmetics & Beauty Expo cited an annual growth rate of 26%.
While the flashy clothing and makeup that characterize K-pop has certainly influenced fashion trends, it's the everyday style you see in K-dramas that has fans searching for ways to get their favorite celebrity's look. Sometimes beauty items sell out instantly after appearing in popular K-dramas.
The incredibly popular Korean actress and beauty brand ambassador Jeon Ji Hyun caused a worldwide shortage of Yves Saint Laurent Rosy Coral lipstick after wearing a similar color in the hit drama My Love From Another Star. The lipsticks sold out all over the world and were selling for as much as $100 dollars a tube on ebay.
When male actor Ji Sung, who plays a man with multiple personality disorder in Kill Me, Heal Me, wore a pink lip tint while playing his teenage girl personality Yona, fans immediately starting searching for the lip gloss. Once they discovered that it was Hera sheer holic pop tint color #1 Marilyn Pink, it was deemed "Yona tint" and sold out in stores and online.
Most recently, the classy fashion seen in the currently airing K-drama Mask has become the envy of fans. Beautiful actress Park Soo Ae's popularity as a trendsetter has fans trying to get a hold of her clothing and accessories. All a marketing company has to do to sell out of an item is label it as “Soo Ae’s Dress” or “Soo Ae’s Necklace.”
As Korean media grows in popularity, their fashion and beauty trends will continue to spread internationally, and you may just find yourself incorporating Korean style into your beauty routines before you know it!
