Worldwide audiences get ready for more telenovela adaptations
NBC will develop a new series based on the Venezuelan telenovela, La Viuda Joven, titled The Black Widow.
This drama focuses on an infamous woman who becomes rich after her wealthy husband mysteriously dies. This is the fourth spouse who happens to pass away while married to her, making her the target of media speculation and police investigation. The original telenovela premiered in 2011 and set ratings records around the world.
"We believe there is huge potential for telenovelas to be adapted and developed for American viewers. These stories clearly have resonance across all cultures and nationalities," NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said.
It is not uncommon for networks and production companies around the world to adapt and remake titles. Currently ABC is slated to air Killer Women, based on the Argentinean series with the same name, with Sofia Vergara as executive producer. Other popular remakes include ABC’s Ugly Betty, a worldwide hit based on the Colombian title Yo Soy Betty, La Fea.
